Angelina Jolie was born in 1975. She is the daughter of Academy Award and Golden Globe winner Jon Voight and former actress Mercheline Bertrand.
Angelina planned to be a funeral director before becoming an actress. She says, "There's something about death that is comforting. The thought you could die tomorrow frees you to appreciate your life now." Jon Voight separated from Mercheline Bertrand when Angelina was only one. He remained in California while the family lived in the East Coast. "He was the perfect example of an artist who couldn't be married." she says. "He had the perfect family, but there's something for him that's very scary about that."
Since she became an actress, she's used her middle name,
Jolie, as her last name. She says, "I love my father, but
I'm not him." Angelina wanted to get famous from her own
performances, not because she was the daughter of an
excellent actor. And that she did!
Jolie chose to persue her career early, first entering acting school at age 11. Angelina grew up in Los Angeles, and later trained at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute.
She worked as a professional model in London, New York and Los Angeles. She's also appeared in music videos for such artists as Lenny Kravitz, Meat Loaf, Antonello Venditti, and the Lemonheads. In addition to that she has acted in five student films, all directed by her brother James Haven, for the USC School of Cinema.
In May of 1996 Angelina married Jonny Lee Miller who was her co-star in the film "Hackers". She filed for divorce in 1997. However, Angelina met Billy Bob Thorton during the spring 1998 shooting of "Pushing Tin". She says, "He's always been my favorite director, the actor I love to watch, the writer I love to read, or hear his words said. And I met him, and he was just such a good person: one of the funniest people on the planet, and really- just a great, great person. He dosen't judge anybody. He's the kind of person that I would like to be like, you know? So for all those reasons he's somebody I wanted as a friend. And, you know, he's the sexiest f*cking creature that ever lived." The pair became an item before the Oscars in March. Soon afterward Jolie was sporting a new tattoo that said "Billy Bob" on her upper arm. Angelina Jolie married Billy Bob Thorton on May 5th at the Little Church of the West Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas.
